Ebola is Back: Vigilance, Solidarity, and Action Are Needed Now

Uganda has confirmed 9 Ebola cases, including 1 death, linked to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Most cases have been reported in Kampala and Wakiso, while hundreds of contacts remain under close monitoring.

This is a reminder that public health emergencies can affect any community. Ebola is a serious disease, but it can be prevented through awareness, early detection, proper hygiene practices, and strict adherence to guidance from health authorities.

As communities, organizations, and development partners, we all have a role to play: Promote accurate health information. Practice good hygiene and infection prevention measures. Report suspected cases promptly. Support vulnerable communities with essential health and sanitation resources.

Situation Report: Ebola Outbreak Response in Uganda

Background

Uganda is currently responding to imported cases of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), a strain of Ebola associated with the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The outbreak presents a growing public health concern due to cross-border movement, limited healthcare resources in vulnerable communities, and the absence of an approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.

Current Situation

As of May 23, 2026, Uganda has confirmed five Ebola cases, including at least one reported death. Confirmed cases include travelers arriving from the DRC, a healthcare worker exposed during patient care, and individuals linked through transportation and close contact.
Although widespread community transmission has not yet been reported, health authorities continue to intensify:
Contact tracing and surveillance
Border screening and monitoring
Infection prevention and control measures
Community awareness and sensitization campaigns
The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Health, has requested approximately USD 24 million to strengthen emergency response efforts over the next three months.
Humanitarian Concerns
The outbreak threatens already vulnerable populations, particularly:
Children and women
Low-income households
Refugee and border communities
Frontline healthcare workers
Fear, misinformation, and limited access to healthcare services continue to increase the risks faced by communities, especially in underserved areas.

Response Efforts

Global humanitarian partners, including globalgiving.org, have activated emergency support mechanisms to assist affected communities and local responders.

Emergency healthcare response
Community education and awareness
