Summary

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as one of the strongest storms on record. Blue Atlas is conducting a needs assessment to guide community support, providing direct aid to farms and agricultural associations. The project includes infrastructure support- this looks like roofs and water catchment systems in the near term and technical guidance and support for climate-smart agriculture initiatives and aquaculture training.

Challenge

Jamaica has been facing the severe impacts from Hurricane Melissa on many fronts, this includes the large demographic of backyard farms, commercial farms, aquaculture operations, and local food systems heavily damaged. Flooding and wind have destroyed infrastructure of towns, farms and business, while limiting access to food and water. Action is needed now to help continue the rebuilding efforts and support food sovereignty. Farmers and organizations are doing the hard part, our goal is to help.

Solution

The Blue Atlas Project continually works with the community to guide our targeted support; providing direct aid to farmers and building a collective vision of intermediate and long term support with our partner organizations. We are now building out the next step, construction of a Food Equity and Sustainability Training (FEAST) Center in Kingston. This site will allow us to provide both a working site and an educational platform to foster trainings on sustainable agriculture techniques.

Long-Term Impact

Through the FEAST Center, in partnership with a university, we will be creating a higher educational curriculum for our aquaculture partner and youth club. Enabling the next generation of farmers to lead the conversation on ways to address and solve food problems. This Center will also stand to be an active and demonstration farm, to host tours and trainings. Through those trainings, we will enable groups in Treasure Beach, near Negril and in the Riverton community to increase food security.
