Summary

In Shivapuri Municipality, 1,500 households depend on unsafe and shrinking water sources. Springs are drying, and daily life is shaped by long journeys for water. This project will restore these lifelines through watershed conservation, source protection, and recharge ponds. Source protection will bring drinking water starting with 50 households, expanding to 200, and reaching 1,500. Led by women's leadership, the project strengthens sanitation and hygiene practices ensuring water security.

Challenge

Once a lifeline, now fading in Silame village, the spring has dried, and the journey for water has begun. Every morning before sunrise, 46-year-old Goma walks two hours down a steep hillside. Like many others, she waits her turn at a small unprotected source shared by dozens of families. She carries back 20 liters of unsafe water travelling 2 km each day because there is no other choice. For about 1,500 households, this is daily life.

Solution

We will restore depleted springs through source protection, and recharge ponds to revive spring. YAE has successfully demonstrated this approach in the mid hills of Nepal. We support distribution of safe drinking water, helping to reduce the long daily walks. With strong community participation especially, the women's leadership, we aim to improve access to safe drinking water. The project will be implemented in phases, reaching 50, 200 and 1500 HHs in phase wise approach.

Long-Term Impact

Over the next five years, 1,500 households in Nepal's fragile hill communities will gain reliable access to safe, climate resilient water systems. Restored and recharged springs will secure sustainable supplies for generations. Women and Children will no longer face daily water shortages, girls will remain in school, and women will regain time for livelihoods and leadership. Stronger health and hygiene practices will improve well-being and support better livelihood opportunities.
