Around 70 dogs are now at the USPCA's new site. The team moved some from the old Haven to the new site at the end of March (photo above). And on April 10, they moved more to the new site, reaching about 70 total. No new infrastructure has yet been constructed, including the cattery, all of which still await local permits (and for which the money from this fundraiser will be used once permits are received). We have engineering plans, we have a project manager lined up (who we hope will remain available), and we are ready to go as soon as all local permits are received.
Meanwhile, all the cats are still at the old Haven. The plan is to move that cattery (see picture) to the new site and build a second cattery at the new location.
Fewer than 150 dogs remain at the old Haven. There's been a steady stream of visitors and volunteers at the old Haven, including a regular Sunday group that helps with walking and feeding. Now that space has cleared up with the transfer of so many dogs, the old Haven dogs are doing very well with more staff and volunteer time (see pictures of the Sunday volunteer group).
One thing we've been working on is raising visibility of the Uganda rescue scammers. The scam hasn't only hurt dogs and cats -physically and mentally--it's also cut into the USPCA's donations because of so much skepticism and negative news around Uganda rescues, legitimate, like the USPCA, and scams. Besides raising visibility, separate from this fundraiser, Animal-Kind International funded 100% of the preliminary veterinary costs for 52 dogs and 6 cats rescued from scammers (see AKI Blog post link below for more).
And the USPCA is still providing the best care possible for their resident dogs and cats and for the community's pets. For example, for World Veterinary Day, the USPCA held a free rabies vaccination and de-worming clinic. They celebrated WVD for 3 days providing shots and de-worming for 128 cats and dogs and registering 21 of those dogs for spay/neuter on the following Saturday.
On the designated day, even more cats and dogs showed up than were registered: 27 dogs (18 spays and 9 castrations) and 5 cats (4 spays and 1 castration)--see photo. The USPCA is a good neighbor! All procedures were free of charge.
Thank you for your support and patience.
