As we continue to work on preparing our heritage train for 2028, it's important to ensure that our locomotive, VIA 6539, stays in good operational condition so it will be ready to run for our train.
Diesel engines need to be run regularly to keep everything in shape and moving properly, so our volunteers are starting the locomotive on a routine basis to ensure everything is in good order and to maintain its operational status. We're also installing an automatic lubrication pump. This pre-lube layover pump circulates oil throughout the engine, keeping the bearings lubricated while the engine is not running. This enables less wear between start-ups when the engine has been shut down for more than 48 hours.
These little things help to ensure that we won't need to undertake more significant work down the line, keeping 6539 ready to run.
Keep an eye on our website and social media for more updates on this locomotive and the rest of our heritage train as it all comes together!
