As we navigate the ongoing recovery and preparedness efforts on St. John, Love City Strong is proud to share a significant development in our "Resilience and Accessibility for St. John Homes" project. Nearly a decade after the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the need for safe, resilient housing remains a critical priority for many residents.
For one local family, the journey since 2017 has been particularly arduous. Their home sustained major damage during the hurricanes, and in the years following, environmental factors have accelerated its disrepair. Currently, they are living in unsafe conditions that compromise their well-being and security.
As we enter the Atlantic hurricane season, the urgency of rectifying these conditions grows daily. Our mission is to ensure that every resident has a structure capable of withstanding the increasing intensity of Caribbean storms.
To meet this need, Love City Strong has officially commenced construction on a new home utilizing the BAUHU modular system. This marks our first time implementing this specific design within our Resilient Housing Initiative.
By expanding our program to include BAUHU modular systems and other alternative solutions like Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), we are pursuing several strategic goals:
Expedited Timelines: Modular designs allow us to significantly reduce construction times compared to traditional methods.
Cost-Effectiveness: We are assessing if these alternative models can provide more budget-friendly paths to high-quality reconstruction.
Structural Resilience: These systems are designed to meet rigorous standards for safety and efficiency, vital for the unique challenges of building on St. John.
While these innovative products present unique logistical challenges, including complex shipping and existing concrete requirements, the data we gather from this build will be instrumental in scaling our efforts. Our ultimate hope is to create a proven concept that allows us to move families into safe living conditions as quickly as possible.
The progress we have made—and the lives we are changing through these new construction techniques—is only possible because of the steadfast support of our donors and the GlobalGiving community. Your contributions provide the resources necessary to experiment with these highly efficient, sustainable methods of building a stronger St. John.
We look forward to sharing further updates as the BAUHU home nears completion and we continue our work to build an island community that is more prepared and resilient for all.
