New Cohort, New Impact: Training the Next Generation of Community Legal Advocates

By Kaitlyn Waring | Program Manager

Dear Friends,

On April 30, 2026, the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences in Oujda officially welcomed the second cohort of HAF’s Legal Clinic Program. The session was led by professors Hamid Rbii, Mohamed Saadi, and Louay Abdelfattah alongside HAF Program Manager Sanae Benaadim.

Implemented in partnership with Mohammed I University and funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, the program strengthens collaboration between universities and civil society organizations while giving students hands-on, practice-based legal experience.

MEET THE COHORT

This year’s group is one of the most diverse yet – 58 master’s and doctoral students from six countries: Morocco, Chad, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nigeria. Additionally, 55.2% of the students are male, and 44.8% are female, while 20 are doctoral students and 38 are master’s students. This diversity in nationality, gender, and experience significantly enriches the learning environment and fosters more inclusive, comparative approaches to legal issues.

TRAINING AND AWARENESS

Phase One - The first phase focuses on building students’ legal knowledge and communication skills. Training sessions cover:

  • Immigration and asylum
  • Human trafficking
  • Family mediation

Alongside these sessions, students have launched a Legal Awareness Campaign, producing multilingual articles on legal topics designed to engage and inform the wider public. It is a chance for students to connect academic learning with real-world impact from the very start of the program.

LOOKING AHEAD: INTO THE FIELD

Once training wraps up, students will move into fieldwork across the Oriental region. Working under HAF’s supervision and alongside CSO partners, they will provide free legal consultations through mobile clinics tailored to the needs of local communities. Additional activities include:

  • Women’s empowerment workshops
  • Community-based participatory initiatives led by students
  • CSO-organized workshops
  • Public outreach through radio programs

The welcome session closed on an energetic and optimistic note, with students actively engaging in discussion on everything from the training schedule to how field visits will be organized. Ms. Benaadim encouraged the cohort to embrace a spirit of initiative, responsibility, and volunteerism as they prepare to support their communities through this work.

We extend our sincere thanks to all partners and stakeholders whose continued support makes this program possible.
