Summary

Hundreds of thousands of learners have already benefited from Green Shoots' Maths support, yet more schools are putting up their hand for help. While access to Maths Curriculum Online (MCO) is provided free to these schools, this donor funding makes possible the support that turns opportunity into achievement: teacher development, classroom resources, parent & carer support, & ongoing remote guidance. Research shows that when technology is combined with sustained support, learners achieve more.

Challenge

Maths is a gateway subject that opens opportunities for future learning, employment, and a better quality of life. Yet many South African learners still face unequal access to quality Maths education. In overcrowded primary classrooms, often with 45 to 60+ learners, it can be difficult for teachers to provide the individual feedback and support learners need. Without strong foundations in primary school, many learners fall behind in a subject that is critical for future success.

Solution

This project provides schools with access to Maths Curriculum Online (MCO) alongside the support needed to turn learning into achievement. Learners receive regular Maths practice, instant feedback, and opportunities to improve. Teachers access real-time insights, classroom resources, and ongoing support to identify misconceptions and provide targeted intervention. Parents and caregivers are equipped to encourage learning at home. Together, this creates the conditions for more learners to succeed

Long-Term Impact

Over time, more learners will develop the confidence, skills, and achievement needed to progress successfully through school and access future opportunities. Teachers will strengthen their ability to use data to support learning, while parents and caregivers become more engaged in their children's education. By building strong Maths foundations in underserved schools, this project helps create lasting improvements in educational outcomes and contributes to a more equitable future.
