I have just returned from a visit to Australia. The trip gave me time to reflect on how far African Angels has come since I first arrived in South Africa in 2003, some 22 ½ years ago!
What started out as a ”gap year” from an established (but not loved) career became an experience which completely changed the direction of my life.
The intent was never to start a school, however, what started as a desire to bring access to quality primary school education to those who had no access, has grown into a thriving school teaching 148 children in fully equipped classrooms every day, employing 11 qualified teachers and cooking 1340 meals a week. (The kids always say the food is the best thing about African Angels!)
We offer extra murals to expand our children’s horizons beyond what they experience in their home community; we offer a safe place for homework and sleep in our hostels, and we nurture and encourage every child to reach their full potential to become the best South African citizen they can be.
I am proud of what we have achieved. Our past newsletters tell the story of our success. We have children awarded scholarships to great high schools. Some have gone on to university; one has already graduated and there are more to come. Two more African Angels have chosen to follow a more technical path after finishing school and are training to be fitters and turners.
NONE of this is possible without your support. “Tripping over Chintsa” was the best thing to happen to me, helping me feel useful and that I had value to add. I am privileged to lead the school in our 15th year of operation, heading towards our 20-year anniversary in 2032. 20 years!!
Thank you for walking this road with me.
