Help Us Build an English Learning Class for Rural Children

For many children in rural Indonesia, learning English remains a luxury rather than an opportunity. Limited access to qualified teachers, learning materials, and language-learning facilities means that many students receive only basic exposure to English at school. As a result, they often struggle to develop the language skills that are increasingly important for higher education, employment opportunities, and participation in a globalized world.

To help address this gap, Punthuk Sewu Learning Center has established an English learning class for children in Bantul, Yogyakarta. Following the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2026, we resumed our weekly English course program, currently serving 23 students, most of whom are at the primary school level. Through interactive lessons, reading activities, vocabulary building, and basic communication practice, we aim to help children gain confidence in using English while making learning enjoyable and accessible.

Beyond language acquisition, the program seeks to foster curiosity, self-confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. For many participants, this is their first opportunity to receive structured English instruction outside of school. By creating a supportive learning environment, we hope to expand their horizons and open new possibilities for their future education and careers.

However, our resources remain limited. To improve the quality and reach of this program, we need additional support for educational materials such as textbooks, reading books, dictionaries, and learning worksheets. We also require teaching equipment, including an LCD projector and other multimedia tools, to create more engaging and interactive lessons. In addition, we hope to recruit additional volunteer teachers, particularly for junior secondary students who require more advanced instruction.

Program Update: Preparing Agroforestry Land for Youth Agribusiness Training

Punthuk Sewu Training Center is currently preparing a one-hectare agroforestry demonstration site in Bantul, Yogyakarta, which will serve as a practical learning space for young people interested in agribusiness, sustainable agriculture, and rural entrepreneurship.

The land is being developed using an integrated agroforestry approach, combining productive tree crops with environmentally sustainable land management practices. In the initial phase, the site will be planted with coffee and durian, two commodities that offer long-term economic value while contributing to landscape restoration and soil conservation. Coffee is well-suited to agroforestry systems and can provide sustainable income for smallholder farmers, while durian offers high-value market potential and strengthens the long-term economic viability of the farming system.

To maximize productivity and demonstrate circular economy principles, the agroforestry area will be integrated with a sheep farming unit. Livestock manure will be processed into organic fertilizer for crop production, while agricultural by-products can be utilized as supplementary livestock feed. This integration reduces dependence on external inputs, lowers production costs, and creates a more resilient farming ecosystem.

Beyond production, the site functions as a living classroom for youth agribusiness training. Participants will gain hands-on experience in land preparation, agroforestry management, organic fertilizer production, livestock management, farm planning, and agribusiness development. Through direct practice, young people will learn not only technical agricultural skills but also how to develop agriculture as a viable and sustainable livelihood.

This initiative reflects our commitment to preparing the next generation of rural entrepreneurs and agricultural leaders. By combining conservation, production, and education within one integrated system, we aim to demonstrate that agriculture can be both environmentally sustainable and economically attractive for young people.

Through this agroforestry training site, Punthuk Sewu seeks to cultivate practical skills, strengthen rural livelihoods, and inspire more youth to participate in building a resilient agricultural future for Indonesia.

GlobalGiving will provide USD 150,000 in Incentive Funds for participating projects.
