The porridge served to the Irerero school children, pregnant and nursing mothers, and the elderly is milled in part from corn, known as maize in Rwanda, shown growing here on the village agricultural cooperative’s farmland.
The crop had looked promising until about a month ago, when one of the women discovered that some of the plants had become infected with bugs that were on the verge of eating the young ears of corn. Quickly, they recruited the help of the local agronomist who identified the pest and was able to apply a safe and appropriate pesticide.
But the plants were getting dry, and the rainy season was almost over. Without a bit more rain, the ears of corn would wither from thirst. Last week their prayers for rain were answered. It rained, not just once, but twice during the week, and the corn plants perked right up. Harvest time will come next month, and the farmers are hoping for a great crop. Thank you for your support!
