This year please help us raise money to support children attending Magwero School for the Deaf in rural Zambia. Deaf children in Zambia face significant challenges, primarily rooted in severe communication barriers, as well as widespread stigma, discrimination, and negative community attitudes. Our project aims to support these children by providing them with the care and dignity they deserve.
Deaf children in Zambia already face multiple barriers in education and wellbeing, and living in poor-quality boarding facilities, these challenges can deepen significantly. Boarding facilities for children with disabilities in Zambia are often poorly equipped with uncomfortable, unhealthy and unsafe living space, interfering with rest, study time, and academic focus, making it harder for deaf children to learn effectively.
HATW's project aim to provide essential support to these children by providing new mattresses to equip the girl's dormitories, providing a safe and clean environment, increasing self-esteem and ensuring they feel valued. Furthermore, well-rested students will have increased concentration and motivation, increasing academic achievements and greater participation in learning activities.
Providing new mattresses for deaf learners has long-term positive impacts on the student's health, education, and wellbeing. Improved sleep supports better physical and mental health, leading to increased concentration, improved school attendance and dignity. Over time, this contributes towards increased self-esteem, positive social development, and improved academic achievements, enabling deaf learners to access further education, employment, and independent livelihoods.
