This project will drill one borehole in Turkana for 10,000 people, preventing disease and improving sanitation. Eliminating 10km-20km distances in search of water, protecting the children from abuse along the way and keeps them in school to learn. The schools will establish kitchen gardens for nutritious vegetables, they can cook for the children in schools while the parents will also grow them at home. This ensures vital nutrition, while families sell surplus to earn an income and livelihoods.
Turkana faces extreme water scarcity, a 77.6% poverty rate, and 75.8% child deprivation. With no infrastructure, women must dig into dry riverbeds just to scoop up shallow water, or walk dangerous 10km-20km for unsafe sources. This triggers waterborne diseases, exposes children to abuse, and drops school attendance to just 39%. The lack of clean water and sanitation traps families in a continuous cycle of malnutrition, high school dropout rates, and unstable livelihoods reinforce vulnerabilities
This project will drill one solar-powered borehole to deliver clean water directly to 10,000 people. By eliminating dangerous 10km-20km walks and the need to dig in dry riverbeds, it protects children from abuse and boosts school attendance above 39%. Accessible WASH infrastructure stops waterborne diseases, while school and home community kitchen gardens combat malnutrition. Selling surplus crops creates an income, securing livelihoods opportunities and supporting families and children needs.
By bringing clean water directly to Turkana, this project establishes a permanent foundation for health, safety, and education. Eliminating the dangerous 10km-20km walk permanently protects girls from exploitation, drastically increasing school enrollment and completion rates. Over time, the school kitchen gardens and household farming training will secure year-round nutrition, eliminating chronic malnutrition. This allows families to focus on education and economic growth and improve health.
