Community Resilience Amidst Political Turmoil!

As South Africa prepares for the upcoming Local Government Elections announced for 4 November 2026, the local socio-political landscape has shifted dramatically. While elections are a cornerstone of democracy, the run-up to the polls introduces significant volatility to community-based development. At Keep The Dream 196, our commitment to remain politically neutral and steadfastly protective of child rights has drawn both friction and opportunities to demonstrate our program's profound community value.

The Reality on the Ground: Political Tensions and Retaliation

The onset of early campaigning has directly impacted our community networks. Recently, an individual within our Self-Help Group (SHG) network decided to run for local ward councilor. To maintain the structural integrity, safety, and political neutrality of our groups, her request to canvas across the wider SHG and Cluster Level Association (CLA) networks was firmly denied.

Unfortunately, this decision met with malicious local retaliation, resulting in the forced closure of two SHG groups. This behavior highlights a recurring challenge in grassroots development: the willingness of individual actors to undermine proven, impactful community safety nets for short-term personal or political gain. We are actively working with the remaining community leadership to stabilize the affected families and rebuild these vital safe spaces.

Misinformation and the Weaponization of Social Media

In Steelpoort, our local Scouting partners have been managing a highly successful vegetable garden project—a vital component of our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and life-skills programming. In an attempt to generate political traction, an aspiring local ward councilor filmed the children participating in the garden and uploaded the footage to social media under false claims of "child labor."

Our local partner responded swiftly and transparently, convening an emergency parents' meeting to reinforce the educational, skill-building nature of the Scouting program. While the aspiring politician attended, apologized, and acknowledged his "misunderstanding" during the meeting, he unfortunately repeated the smear online shortly thereafter. This incident underscores the increasing vulnerability of youth-focused non-profits to digital misinformation during election cycles.

Rising Macro Volatility and Xenophobic Undercurrents

Beyond localized politicking, national economic pressures—exacerbated by a 43% national unemployment rate—have ignited a volatile, highly organized anti-migrant sentiment. This rhetoric has moved from political messaging to overt physical danger, leading to forced repatriations and tragic, targeted violence against individuals unable to speak regional vernaculars, affecting foreign nationals and domestic minorities alike.

With a major national march planned for the end of the month, KTD196 is highly cognizant of the risks faced by the communities we serve, particularly undocumented foreign nationals who have lived peacefully in the region for decades. Due to systemic backlogs within the Department of Home Affairs, many families remain entirely exposed, and returning to crisis-stricken or war-torn countries of origin is simply not a viable option.

Moving Forward: Protecting the Dream

Despite these compounding pressures, the core mission of KTD196 remains unchanged. We are actively fortifying our operations to safeguard our beneficiaries, field staff, and community partners. Your continued support provides the baseline stability required to navigate this volatile environment, ensuring that the children of Limpopo continue to have access to safe spaces, life skills, and nutritional security.

Thank you for standing with us during these challenging times.

Blessings

Louise
