Support Nepal Earthquake Relief

Separate toilets for boys and girls including proper hand washing basins were re-constructed in Shree Bagh Bhairav Secondary School soon after the April earthquake.

The school is located in one of the remote areas of Lalitpur and many students have to walk for miles just to reach their school. The earthquake completely destroyed boys' toilet whereas girls’ toilet, though unaffected, was in a state of minimal use due to lack of water facility and sanitation. Students sought out for alternatives, which even included going to nearby forest. “It was very difficult for us when these toilets were not maintained as they are now”, shared one of the girl students. “When we were on our menstruation period, staying at home was not an option, it was a compulsion.”

The problems have now been solved. Recognizing the difficulties faced by students and teachers, toilet construction was started as soon as the school approached ECCA. Along with the boys' toilet, existing girls' toilet was remodeled with an incinerator, which is used to burn used sanitary pads. “This action has benefitted over 255 students studying in the school and teachers as well. We are glad we approached you for help”, said the principal of the school to ECCA.

Responsibilities for regular monitoring of water facility and cleanliness of the toilets has been taken by the school’s nature club. This has generated a sense of responsibility among young students. But, most importantly, construction of toilets has encouraged students to attend school regularly and this, in itself, is a huge achievement.
