1. Introduction

We are pleased to share an encouraging update on the VSCWC Farmland Development Project in Warri, Delta State. Since our last report, we have moved from the planning and community engagement stage into the initial implementation phase of the project.

This milestone marks an important step toward our vision of empowering rural families through sustainable agriculture while creating long-term opportunities for improved household welfare and educational support for children.

2. Pilot Farming Initiative Launched

Following discussions with village leaders and community members, VSCWC has now identified three local farmers to participate in the first phase of our pilot farming program.

Each farmer has been allocated a portion of the available farmland to begin cultivation activities. The farmers have already started preparations and will focus primarily on growing:

• Cassava
• Yam

These crops were selected based on local farming knowledge, soil suitability, market demand, and their importance as staple food sources within the community.

3. Supporting Local Families

As part of this pilot phase, the participating farmers will retain ownership of all crops harvested from their allocated plots.

This means that:

• Farmers may use the produce to feed their families.
• Farmers may sell their harvest at local markets.
• Income generated from crop sales will remain with the farmers.
• Families will benefit directly from improved food security and economic opportunities.

We believe this approach will allow participating households to experience immediate benefits while enabling VSCWC to observe and evaluate the impact of land access on family livelihoods.

4. Monitoring and Learning

The current phase is designed as a learning and evaluation period.

Over the coming months, VSCWC will monitor:

• Crop growth and farming progress.
• Harvest outcomes and yields.
• Household benefits experienced by participating families.
• Income-generating opportunities created through market sales.
• Overall sustainability of the pilot approach.

The information gathered will help us determine how the project can be expanded responsibly and effectively in future phases.

5. Looking Ahead

We are excited about the potential of this initiative and encouraged by the willingness of local farmers to participate.

Our next steps include:

• Regular engagement with participating farmers.
• Monitoring crop development throughout the growing season.
• Documenting outcomes and lessons learned.
• Assessing opportunities to involve additional farmers in future phases.
• Exploring ways to connect agricultural success with improved educational outcomes for children in the community.

6. Conclusion

This is a significant milestone for the VSCWC Farmland Development Project. What began as a series of conversations with community leaders has now progressed into active cultivation by local farmers.

We are particularly excited that three farming families now have the opportunity to benefit directly from the land through both household consumption and income generation.

While this remains an early-stage pilot, we are optimistic about the impact it may have on family wellbeing, food security, and long-term community development. We look forward to monitoring progress over the coming months and sharing further updates with our valued donors and supporters.

Thank you for your continued support of VSCWC and our mission to strengthen communities and improve opportunities for children and families.
