Notes from the Journey

Hello Supporters!

We hope that all of our scholarship supporters are doing well during these times. In March, right before most of the United States shut down, several of our GLK volunteers were able to make a trip to Tanzania to check in with our board members, students, and friends. Gayle, her sister Elizabeth, and longtime volunteer Linda all made the eight day trip abroad to Bukoba on the western shore of Lake Victoria.

Luckily, while on the trip, Linda was able to make a personal connection with two students she is currently sponsoring, Avitus and Kelvin. Avitus, a gifted math student, was happy to receive several math textbooks Linda brought over on behalf of her son, so that Avitus can use them to supplement his studies. Kelvin, is doing well and making progress at his school, Kibeta English Medium Primary School.

While in Tanzania, Linda was inspired to take on a new student to sponsor, Aneth. Aneth is currently living in a tent with her mother and two younger siblings as her home was destroyed in an earthquake. Aneth is in her first year of a three-year pharmaceutical sciences program. In addition to support for her studies, the GLK Student Fund provided Aneth with new eyeglasses and food.

This short time in Bukoba was filled with hard work, precious students, thankful family members, happy graduates, demanding travel, and productive meetings with the scholarship fund trustees and field representative. The daily experience was overwhelming. Trustees presented ever more worthy and needy candidates for scholarship assistance. It is hard to refuse true need. Each student presented a unique situation and study goal. The number of our scholarship students continues to rise.  The three travelers left Tanzania knowing that the scholarships granted to our students are life changing and the need is still great.

Our students are typically supported in one of two ways: either through our pool of undesignated funds or through the commitment of a dedicated sponsor who makes regular (often monthly) contributions. While we are grateful for any contribution you are able to make, we encourage you to consider sponsoring a student. This level of consistency allows us to make more stable long-term commitments to our students. This is critical especially during times of uncertainty. If you have the means at this time to consider sponsoring a student, we would be so grateful for this life-changing commitment.

We hope all of you are staying healthy and safe. We look forward to providing you with continual updates.
