Through Haciendo LUPA, 200 children ages 3 to 5 in one of Buenos Aires' most vulnerable communities participate in reading, storytelling, and educational play activities that strengthen language skills, foster a love of learning, and prepare them to succeed in school. The program also equips caregivers and early childhood educators with tools to support children's learning and development beyond the classroom.
Villa 21-24 is one of the largest informal settlements in Buenos Aires, home to over 50,000 people. Many children grow up with limited access to books and early learning opportunities. As a result, they often enter school without the language and literacy skills needed to understand what they read, learn new concepts, and keep up in class. These early learning gaps can affect school performance, engagement, and ultimately their chances of completing their education.
The project provides weekly reading, storytelling, educational play, and creative learning activities for 200 children ages 3 to 5, helping them develop the language and literacy skills needed for school. We also work with families, caregivers, and early childhood educators to promote reading and learning beyond the classroom, creating supportive environments where children can thrive and succeed in school.
Children who develop strong language and literacy skills early in life are more likely to succeed in school and access greater opportunities in the future. By also strengthening the capacity of families, caregivers, and early childhood centers, the project helps create a community where learning, reading, and child development can continue long after the program ends, helping more children stay in school and reach their full potential.
