Zambezi Farm Nears Sustainability

By Marsha Winsryg | Director

The Zambezi Farm has graduated from a big project with a long learning curve to a functioning enterprize able to cover more than half of its expenses with sales of vegetables and livestock. The big crop is corn. The women who work and own the farm picked twenty-five 50 kilo sacks which when milled will sell for $80 each for a total of $2000 plus 2 bags each for our workers' families, a 3 months supply.

They are also now beginning to pick the tomatoes which are the other big income producer for the farm. Until recently they have been buying tomato seedlings which cost 1$ each. Last April they constructed their own small greehouse to start 400 tomato plants from seed themselves and saved $400. In June the group harvested these beautiful red and yellow fruits that are very popular at the market and will ultimately bring in $900.

500 broiler chicks were started 4 weeks ago and will go to market in two weeks and bring in $1700.This will be the most successful harvest season sales ever.

The farm is truly approaching sustainability!

Other fantastic news for Zambia: The president of Zambia, Hichilema Hakainde, has implemented many programs for improving life in Zambia. As he comes up for re-election, no one dares to run against him! He has made all public schools through high school free, begun building solar electric and water systems throughout the country, and initiated special programs for young women who have historically been unable to access education and jobs. He chose a woman, Mutale Nalumango, to be his vice president. It looks like he will continue his good works for the next five years.

Zambia is thriving.
