Americares is responding to the deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has claimed dozens of lives and sparked an international health emergency. We're focusing our response on preventing infections through community-level education, personal protective equipment (PPE) and access to safe water in the affected areas - all of which are critical for stopping the spread of the virus.
The situation is urgent. Within weeks of initial detection, hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths were reported, signaling widespread community transmission. The WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern, highlighting the risk of global spread. The outbreak involves the a strain, which lacks an approved vaccine. And, the ongoing conflict, poor infrastructure, population movement, and crossborder spread are further compound the situation.
We're focusing on preventing infections through community education, PPE, and safe water access. Americares is working with trusted local partners in highly impacted areas: distributing PPE, rehabilitating water sources for ~1,000 households, providing 800 PPE kits to high-risk schools and churches, training leaders and health workers, installing handwashing stations, expanding screenings, boosting education, and strengthening infection control-reaching nearly 63,000 people.
We are in close communication with global response coordination bodies, including the World Health Organization and the UN to assess needs and explore how we can best support response efforts. We are tracking regional implications and staying closely connected with partners in neighboring countries to support preparedness and help mitigate cross-border risks. Drawing on our experience from past Ebola outbreaks, we are focusing on strengthening local health systems through trusted partners.
